Elevating Spaces for Wellness

Writer: Christie Da SilvaChristie Da Silva

Designing for wellness is about creating an environment that nurtures the mind, body, and soul in a way that feels both luxurious and transformative. As a designer, I see wellness as an elevated experience, a philosophy that infuses the very essence of a space with harmony, vitality, and beauty.

To begin, the foundation of wellness in design lies in understanding the natural rhythms of life and how space influences our moods, health, and productivity. This means prioritising the tactile, emotional, and sensory experiences that emerge when every detail is considered with intention. From the textures of the materials to the colours that surround you, each element plays a role in creating a sanctuary of calm and vibrancy. The most innovative spaces for wellness go beyond the conventional, embracing bold forms, unexpected colour combinations, and materials that offer more than just a visual aesthetic—they offer an emotional connection.

1. Thoughtful Materiality

The selection of materials is fundamental and Nature is the ultimate designer. We should always explore how we can push the boundaries of materials to create new, unexpected experiences. Incorporating tactile textures like natural stone, rich velvets, and warm, organic woods creates a tactile richness that deepens the sensory connection to a space. I love combining contrasts—smooth, polished surfaces with raw, rough textures—this tension evokes a sense of dynamic balance, mirroring the human experience of both stillness and motion. These materials evoke timelessness and grounding, encouraging reflection while exuding understated luxury.

2. Light as Energy

Light is another vital component in the design of wellness spaces. Natural light is an obvious preference, but it is also about designing with the rhythm of artificial light. Thoughtful placement of light sources can elevate moods, enhance circadian rhythms, and deepen the experience of a room. Layering light—ambient, task, and accent—creates a multidimensional effect, transforming how we feel in a space throughout the day. I like to integrate sculptural, artistic light fixtures that act as focal points while also serving as practical elements, giving a space both beauty and functionality.

3. Color and Emotional Well-being

Colour is one of the most powerful tools we have in design—it can shift our energy and emotional state in an instant. For wellness spaces, I advocate for a colour palette that feels restorative. Soft, muted tones like mineral greens, deep blues, and warm neutrals create a sense of calm and tranquility. At the same time, I believe in using pops of vibrant hues—rich marigold, terracotta, or the deep purples of amethyst—to stimulate creativity and positivity. These colour combinations, balanced with natural materials, create spaces that feel both energising and peaceful.

4. Sound and Acoustics

Sound, while often overlooked, is an essential aspect of wellness design. Incorporating acoustical treatments—such as plush textiles, acoustic panels, or even sculptural elements that absorb sound—creates a sense of auditory serenity. The hum of a quiet room, the whisper of textiles, or the soft rush of water features can all contribute to a deeper sense of well-being.

5. Bringing Nature Indoors

Biophilic design—the practice of integrating nature into the built environment—is a cornerstone of wellness in interiors. The natural world offers profound benefits for emotional and physical health, from improved air quality to a sense of serenity and connection. Beyond plants and greenery, I encourage incorporating organic materials, expansive windows with views of nature, and artwork inspired by the natural world. This fusion of indoors and outdoors feels sophisticated and timeless, while also speaking to a deeper need for connectivity with nature. This connection fosters creativity, reduces stress, and promotes mental clarity.

6. Sculptural Forms and Artistry

In wellness design, every piece should be purposeful, and yet possess an element of artistry. Sculptural furniture and hand-crafted details elevate an interior, transforming functional items into pieces of art. I often look to balance statement pieces with minimalist forms, creating moments of surprise and elegance. An artful chair or a unique sculpture invites contemplation and serves as an emotional anchor within the space, connecting the individual to the environment in a deeply personal way.

7. Movement and Flow

Lastly, the flow of space itself is crucial to designing for wellness. Rooms must be designed with a sense of ease, where movement feels fluid and unobstructed. The layout should inspire a natural rhythm, facilitating both relaxation and activity. As in the body, a well-designed space must have balance—quiet, peaceful areas to retreat to, as well as dynamic, stimulating spaces for creativity and connection. The integration of open-plan layouts, intimate alcoves, and seamless transitions between rooms promotes well-being by creating a harmonious environment that encourages mental clarity and reduces stress.

Designing for wellness is about creating environments that are not just beautiful, but transformational. It is about celebrating the senses and nourishing the soul, allowing each space to act as a sanctuary—a luxurious, thoughtful refuge from the chaos of the outside world. The true art of wellness in interior design is not just in the individual elements, but in how they come together to form a cohesive, holistic experience that elevates every moment spent within.
